I hve an 03 Dakota crew cab 4 door. So I got it at a dealership and they said it wasn't 4x4 but the place where they brought it from initially had it as a 4x4. So anyways I was looking under the millage and seen it said service 4x4. So now I'm curious as to is it or isnt it 4x4. Do all of them say service 4x4 regardless? Thanks in advance.
Does it have a switch or lever to put it into 4 wheel drive? Does it have CV axles at each of the front wheels? Does it have a transfer case? If yes, it’s 4x4.
I think, if it's not a 4x4,, the recording of a "4x4 service" may be out of slackness or in the worst case scenario dealerships trying to exaggerate the service fees.
In any case. Look for the 4WD selector to the left of the AC controls. if it is a empty change slot its 2wd then you will know for sure.

4wd (picture)
OR take a quick look under the front of the truck and look for a drive shaft with a CW boot on it going to the front wheel hub. if it is there , it is or was 4wd. if there is no drive shaft but in place of it a coil suspension spring than it is 2wd.

How could you not know if it's a 4x4? For me that's always a major decision on my vehicle purchases, and it's pretty obvious if it has 4x4 because it will have a shift lever in the floor or a switch on the dash.
