Default Transfer case question

2000 Dakota 4x4 3.9l auto.

My transfer case is blown. I'm going to replace it. It's an NV231. Can I swap this with a transfer case from an AWD Dakota?

It would be best to put the same thing back in, the AWD transfer case isn't as good as the NP231.

Isn't as good? In what way? So far as I know, most of the specs are the same, as far is input power, etc. It adds the AWD ability as well. I had considered putting one in my 3/4 ton truck..... but, I would exceed its GVWR when towing my dump trailer.......

If it's the np242 transfer case he's talking about, they used those in Jeeps and they don't hold up as well to bigger tires and off-road abuse. I had a np242 in my XJ and I swapped it out for an np231.

According to theory, the 242 should be a stronger case than the 231..... (using the new process naming convention.... 2nd number being the relative 'strength' of the case.....) The 231 case has a max input torque rating of 730, 241 is 1028.... I wouldn't be surprised if the 242 wasn't somewhere in the middle there, considering the additional differential built into the case.....

I had a link to a chart that showed the various specs for NVG t-cases, but, I can't find the one that included the 242 any more..... That information seems to be a closely guarded secret. (or, my google-fu is failing me.)
