"Intermittent" that definitely makes my mind focus on the wire harness. What was once a intermittent issue may have become a static issue.
it's also possible for corrosion inside of a wire to cause a gradual increase in resistance while the insulation on the outside of the wire may appear fine.

Incidentally, the motor caught yesterday and I drove it for a few miles never letting it below 1.000 RPM. Back at home I let it go to idle and after a few minutes it died and did not want to
restart (I didn't want to run down the battery so I only tried a few times). Will try again tomorrow.
