2000 3.9 dakota - what should I look out for
Have an opportunity to buy a 2000 3.9 dakota with 65000 miles, automatic 4x4.
It's been maintained well with one owner.
What sort of issues and signs of problems should I look for when I go to look at it?
I'll probably bring it to a local mechanic for a second opinion, what should I tell him to specifically inspect?
Thanks

Aside from the stuff you look at on any used vehicle, check the intake for evidence of oil in the bottom. I expect to see a bit, just from the PCV system, but, if the entire bottom of the intake is coated, or oil is pooling in there, blown plenum gasket. (two-piece intake manifold) It's a common failure, and an easy fix.

What about transmission, anything I can look for?
I've read that some of these trucks have trans problems down the road.

the first generation Magnum engines were fairly bullet proof. They can trace their design back to the 273 in 1964. My last Dakota just needed maintenance until well over 100K when I replaced the steering rack. Look for oil on that. Other than that, the truck never got anything but oil changes and brakes. (I have a heavy foot at times.)
