Default 2 wheel abs module circuit board burnt

Hope someone may have been thru this already. My 02 Dakota speedo stopped working and abs and brake lights came on and trans shifting was erratic. I read code and got a P0500 speed sensor so I checked internet and found everyone saying it I was the rear diff speed sensor. I replaced it but no difference. I checked wiring etc and spent quite a bit of time doing checks suggested I had read about. I ended up finding the circuit board obviously burnt inside the 2 wheel abs module mounted on the left inner fender. I bought a used unit as a new unit is not available. I left the base housing and lines alone and switched the electrical half from the used unit. I now have a speedometer, the brake light went off and the transmission shifts better than with the burnt board. However I now have a flashing abs light and a chime every few seconds no matter how long or far the truck is driven!

Surprisingly now there is no fault code! I checked with a dealer and tech said he knew of no way to reprogram the board etc. I don’t see how anything would change if I put on the complete used unit on which would necessitate having an abs brake bleed being done that I don’t have the equipment to do.

The ABs units have to be VIN matched. The tech you talked to was probably a youngster; the factory tool (DRB3) for our trucks ended service in 2005 and are not common anymore. I got lucky and snagged one for a a pretty penny as soon as i saw it available.

I contacted another dealer, verified they had a drb3 scan tool and took truck in as a wait. The service manager made my appointment and it sounded like he agreed the module would be able to flayed or programmed with info about the truck to cure the problem. When I took it in there was no record of my appointment but they could take it anyway. I requested they have the tech come see me before any repairs were started so I could explain the unusual problem and burnt board etc. After waiting two hours I went to advisor and was taken to truck where tech said he had already started on it an hour ago! I showed him burnt original circuit board and explained the used one now causes abs light to flash and chime now never stops. He said he could not communicate with system to even show the abs module!! He also stated even if he could there was nothing he would be able change but would only be able to maybe see what the problem is. I told him to quit on it. I explained nowhere had I been able to find where a new abs module was available either new, rebuilt or even anyone who was repairing them. He checked with parts and I was told a module was available for $382 plus labor to see if it would show up when scanned. I said if they were selling a new or rebuilt part etc that it should be a plug and play deal since there was nothing he could change! He stated he didn’t know if it would work or cure the problem! I researched some more but still could not find anything other than used were available. Dodge parts on line a month or so ago showed the part was no longer available so I don’t know where dealer was able to get a part from. I disconnected the harness plug to the master cylinder just to see what would happen - lo and behold the abs light now just stays on without blinking and the chime has stopped. The park/ info light is now on but I don’t care. I am used to checking brake fluid as we had to do for many years before there was electronic monitoring. I also don’t care if I no longer have 2 wheel rear abs as I have had many vehicles without abs. The speedo still works so transmission shifts correctly and I can live with that especially since I am retired and the truck is not my main vehicle. Hopefully everything stays as if is now.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery to reset everything? Leave it disco'd overnight, or turn the ignition key to start position to dissipate any leftover charge.

Wow that's some F'd up customer service.

What ever happened to good customer service? I guess labor dollar is more important than customer satisfaction.

What "abs" code was it throwing?
A specific scanner is needed on abs codes.

Wow, to be honest I have never seen something like that. I mean, the circuit board on the abs module getting burned out, that is not what you get to see everyday. I mean, seriosuly what did you do to it so it burnt? I used to work in a car service during my teenage years, however i have never seen anything like this. Did you already replace it? How much did you pay for that? I don't even think that every electrician would start working on that. I think the best option woulb be to find a specialist.

Default ABS & Brake dash lights on???????

I'm having the same problem with mine now.....2007 3rd Gen Dakota, 4x4, crew cab. The ABS and brake warning lights came on the dash and I lost the speedometer, and all computer component info (MPG, distance indicator, etc). I was told I would need to buy a used Dodge Dakota ABS System module for $380 and it was going to be difficult to have any dealership install it since they cannot warrant the work on a used part. I'm now stuck with no speedometer and my auto trans shifting is somewhat slow at times. I can't find anyone who knows how to really diagnose this problem and all I get is a lot of guesswork to fix it. If anyone has had the same issue and has fixed the problem, I am all EARS.......sure could use the help!!!!!!
