What engine? Auto or manual trans? 2 or 4 wheel drive? Chocolate, or Vanilla?

1993 would be first gen. I believe a 44RH would be correct but you'll want to double check that with the first gen crowd.

the early V8 ones all had the heavier trans in them esp the 4wd A518 they were called then. now called 46RH. I have had several Dakotas and the only ones I have had that didn't come with the 46 RH/RE were the 6 cylinder ones. my 92, 93 and 96 were all V9s and had that trans in them, while my 90, 94 and 99 are/were V6s and came with the 42/44 series (the 42 and 44 look identical from the outside, differences were internal, related to number of clutch discs in each clutch pack) and I put a 46RH into my 94 V6 truck, bolted right in. only difference noted in the swap were the bellhousing inspection cover and the dipstick/tube.
the torque converters btween them were different but bolted up to the engine the same as each other. same mounts, same driveshaft, same electrical plugins.
