Default Getting trouble codes

So my check engine light is on. I went up to AutoZone and had them read the code for me, but I know you're supposed to be able to get the code off the odometer readout. I've tried several variations of the on-off-on-off-on with the key, and done the system check by holding in the trip button while turning the key on, but I can't get the trouble codes to come up on the odometer. What am I doing wrong? I got the key sequence to work on our 02 Caravan, but can't get it to work on my 98 Dakota.

So......what was the code telling you at Auto zone? Did you cure the problem? It sounds like you should get a Superchips tuner, then you can read codes and get more power as well.

The code was a misfire on cylinder 6. Not sure what the problem was, but it hasn't happened again, and that was quite a while ago. Anyway, how much are we talking for one of these tuner chips? I've heard there's a lot of rip-offs out there, as well as chips that really are worth it. How much should I be looking to pay?
