Default Nv233 to Nv244 swap

I currently have a shot nv233 transfer case in my dakota. I'm looking to swap it out and I'm considering upgrading to the Nv244 transfer case. My question is will an Nv244 transfer case from a 2005 durango fit in my 2003 dakota? I'm having a hard time finding an nv244 that's pre 2005.

Physically, I think it will bolt right in, shifting it is going to be the interesting part..... as I think the 244 has an extra range in there?

That would make life a lot easier. I thought they had a specific 'range' for 2wd as well?

I wouldn't consider the NV244 as an upgrade.

Why not? According to theory, the 244 should be stronger than the 233.....

The 233 is just an electric shift NP231 and the 244 is an electric shift NP242. In the Jeep world the NP231 has proven to hold up to abuse better than the NP242. I had the NP242 in my 97 Jeep and swapped it out for the NP231. Another major disadvantage in the NV244s case is it doesn't have a 2wd option like the 231, 233, and 242 does. There is also an NP241 and it is stronger than the 231,233, 242, and 244 so it would be an upgrade but you would have to add a manual shift lever and linkage. Or if you really need a beast of a transfer case get an NV271, they can take an unbelievable amount of abuse.
