Default Run without Front DriveShaft??? 2001 Dakota 4x4

2001 Dakota Quad Cab,4x4, 4.7l, automatic. Electronic 4wd switch with 2wd, 4 Hi and R low. My front drive shaft CV joint has failed and it's making a loud knocking noise at lower speeds. I am in Puerto Rico and can not get parts for at least a week. Can I remove the driveshaft and run without it in 2 wheel drive until I can get the parts? The driveshaft spins even when not in 4wd? If so do I have to mark shaft locations or any other considerations for a smooth install later? Thank you all and Happy Thanksgiving.

Sure, I've seen lots of 4X4's of all brands run without the front shaft. Yes, mark the yoke on the shaft so you don't reinstall the shaft out of phase. There is a selector that unhooks one axle shaft and lets the other free wheel.

Dakotas don't have a CAD.

Thank you for your responses. I removed it and ordered replacement. Next job is to get 4wd switch to work. No lights being displayed. Ordered a TCCM from junker. Will install next week.
