I know on my Firebird Formula, changing the suspension over to poly bushings tightened it up in a big way. The ride wasn't quite as nice, but for 'spirited' driving, poly is indeed much better than rubber.

You may have, but Polyurethane bushings are like that they are not molded into the shell like a rubber bushing they are jush pushed into the shell. how they overcome this is smashing the Polyurethane bushing into the shell.
So that's why its sticking out so much the big washer and nut crush or push it into the shell with force clamping the Polyurethane bushing in the shell.
But that's Polyurethane bushings main flaw they are not a one piece part like a rubber bushing.
This is why they squeak the bushing is not a one piece part so they float in the shell.
My guess is Polyurethane will not adhere to the shell as it would break up if it was a one piece part its too stiff a material but if it floats in the shell it can be used.
