Default 2000 2.5L Sport steering rack

After a couple years of topping off my steering fluid reservoir and then replacing the steering lines on my Sport, my mechanic informed that the leaking fluid was from the steering rack. One, can a leak be fixed and, second, I was quoted $500 to replace the rack. This sounds like way too big for me to do myself with a shade tree mechanic set of tools. Can a rack be repaired for leaks?

You can rebuild it, but, its actually more work than replacing it..... In all reality, it's likely cheaper just to toss in a new one.

Kinda what I figured. And probably not what a guy in his 60’s with arthritis in his hands should be tackling. I’ll stick to the easy stuff. Thanks for the advice, HeyYou!
