But number 6 is likely in firing position. (assuming a V-8) And yes, you can just roll the crank over once to get the dot on the cam gear down at the bottom, and change the gears at that point.
The mark on the damper just doesn't matter. Its the dots on the cam/crank gears that MUST be lined up properly. Everything else should fall into place. (assuming you aren't touching the distributor.
The crank makes two full revolutions to get thru the whole firing order. (4 cycle engine. ) So, while both the 8, and 6 have cylinder 1, the six is short two in the firing order, (and I don't recall what exactly it is at the moment) so, whatever cylinder is 4th in your firing order, will be the one in firing position when the dot on the cam gear is at the bottom. I have no idea why the manufacturers decided to do it that way. I see SOOOOO many folks rebuild engines, and then wonder why it won't start the first time around, only to find timing is 180 out.....
The pin holds the arm in, until you have it installed, once everything is in place, and you are SURE it is right, pull the pin. (then you have four seconds till it explodes.... oh, no, wait... wrong application....)

i cant. get the darn top sprocket in ..whilw lower is in place an that tight tensioner

Can get bottom started an by the time its close to grove at top one its too tight to get up into it.
i tried a socket the exact size of inside of sprocket on a bolt thats same thread as one going inside top spocket but cant get it to slide in ....

They are pretty tight when new. I usually slide the crank gear on first, but, not all the way. Put the chain, with the cam gear already in it, onto the crank gear, then move BOTH gears back at the same time, and install the cam gear onto the cam. That *should* work....
I really dont want to do what might make it even tighter..
Im tempted to pull pin out but that may make it more tight..would be good if it were replacable stand alone

The wire across is just across there at front to prevent chain from jumping out of tentioner .
tried it without many times .
I bet theres a round socket typebolt in tool with keyway that would help to slide / tap top sprocket in also.
