Which model year hemi should I be looking to find to put in my 2004?

For your Dakota? Any year you want since none of them are plug and play. What's wrong with your current engine?

Somewhere there is a guide for this.

You want the earlier hemi I think. Then you use a early hemi engine computer from a 2003-2005 ram and plug it in place of your PCM. But i forget which cab harness it requires, I think you have to have the 4.7 NGC controller and cab wiring.
