Default Transmission Cross Reference

Hi I asked this before in one of my threads can anyone tell me which automatic transmissions fit a 2001 Dakota 3.9 4X4 im going to wrecker tomorrow to get replacement transmission there are three 2002's and one 2001 Dakotas one has 3.9 the other ones are V8 there does Transmission have to come from same year and engine size or do V8's use same tranny?
How do I tell which one I have in my truck?
Thx in advance.

97-99 uses 3 pin neutral safety
01-04 uses 5 pin neutral safety
I forget which 2000 uses

42re (3.9) and 44re (5.2) use the same case but different clutch packs
46re (5.9) uses a different case and clutch packs
Not sure if 46re is longer than 42/44re but I wouldn't chance it

thank you magnethead by clutch packs do you mean torque converter? or is that something different im planning to get torque converter with used tranny as I understand you its best to stick with 42re there are two trucks that have 4.7's in them too do they use 42re or 44re and would 44re fit if I got torque converter with it or are torque converters different (would they bolt up to flex plate) on V6 if they came from V8?

The 4.7l was paired with the 45RFE. Sometimes it would be called the 545RFE but its just a different software. The clutchpacks are an internal part that allows the shifts to take place.

thx so do you think that would bolt up to my 3.9? and would PCM that I have learn to work with it and is torque converter same bolt pattern on flex plate? sorry to riddle you with questions but I have to pull it myself and it would suck to pull one that doesn't fit.
thx

It will not work for you. Only the 42RE and the 44RE would be possible without custom fabrication. Your going to want to find a 42RE to save yourself the trouble of compatibility issues.

what supadoom said.

A 42RE (3.9 V6) would be direct replacement
A 44RE (5.2 V8) will bolt in, but has a little more parasitic drag from extra clutch packs inside (designed to handle more power from the V8)

A 46RE (5.9 V8) will bolt to the engine but may require different driveshaft and will have even more parasitic drag

A (5)45RFE (3.7 V6, 4.7 V8) is not compatible at all.

You'll only want to use a torque converter for a 3.9 V6. The 5.2/5.9 converter may try to drag through the brakes at a stop due to the artificially reduced stall speed.
