2000 4.7 V8 Magnum and 2003 4.7 V8 Magnum
Hi everyone,
Recently I started to attempt a building project on a 2003 Dodge Dakota. Short story short, the owner ran the truck overheated for an extended amount of time and did an extended amount of damage to thermostats, and head gaskets, and made the heads go all sorts of wack. The main plan was that I was going to take the good motor out of the parts truck (2000 Dodge Dakota Sport) and just throw that motor in the truck and call it good. It didn't go that easy. Story of my life.
Recently, after making a completely different Reddit post about another subject, it came to my attention that these engines had two completely separate tone rings. The 2000 having a 16-tooth tone ring, while the 2003 had a 32-tooth tone ring. I'm glad we came to this realization when we had, because we were about to start throwing the engine in soon, and we would've had no clue what was ailing the truck. We have several options that we are considering taking, one being that we pull the crank shaft, and just do a Tone ring swap. I've been told that simply swapping the tone rings should be enough to get everything on track. We're considering the option of just completely swapping both wire harnesses and the PCMS that go with them. And the final option being that we tear off the heads of the good motor, have them reseated in a shop just to be safe, and throw everything back onto the old motor seeing as it appears the block is still good, the bearing have no play and everything else seems to be in working condition.
This is where my question arises. Is there anyone, who has attempted a swap to this extent, or anyone who knows what the best option to take would be? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. if more information is needed, I will be checking the comments regularly.
Thank you everyone!
