Default 1998 Dakota won’t start won’t crank

Placed a new battery because it had been sitting for a long time. Then I put the key in ignition and everything lights up, the ding noise goes on then I turn the key and nothing! No cranking, no revving, no nothing. Any ideas?

Try starting in neutral.

Try tapping two things while someone holds the key in crank position. If either works, there is your culprit.

1. Starter (use something heavy, like a hammer or wrench).
2. Starter relay
