Question 1999 Dakota 5.2 4x4 Transmission Swap

Hey all,

I'm a new Dakota owner and also new to this forum. I bought a Dodge Dakota recently and I'm looking to replace my current transmission as it pops out of 1st gear and makes some whirring sounds that are more than noticeable.

I've been looking for a parts truck local to me that I can take the transmission from and swap in. From what I have read online my 1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2L 4x4 has the NV3500 transmission. There is a great looking parts truck near me but it is a 2003 4.7L v8 Dodge Dakota with a 5 speed manual which (from what I have read) also has the 5 speed manual NV3500. Will this be a direct swap? I have read both that the bell housing bolt holes line up, and I have also heard that they don't. Just looking for some clarification.

Thanks!

Here's my Dakota!

I have a 87 dakota 4wd...... I replaced the transmission (NV2500) with a NV3500 out of a 2002-3? Dakota that had a 4.7 in it. The bolt pattern is the same. Even the 87 NP 207 transfer case bolted up. The only problem I had was I had to make a bracket to mount the transfer case shifter as the Newer transmission did not have the bosses on the side to mount the shifter.... Also, the flywheel cover was a little different, but the one for the 4.7 fit fine, and I think, the reason my orig. would not work was due to the nv2500 trans being smaller, using a smaller flywheel etc,
Afterwards, I even swapped in a 2000 5.9 engine in the 87 dakota.
So my point is, the bolt pattern is the same....
