Default 2001 Dakota Cruise Control Not Working

This is a 2001 Dakota V6 4 door 2wd. The cruise control used to work but was sticky. I hard to hard press it a few times before it would actually come on to be set,
Now it doesn't come on at all. What should I be looking at. I have back spasms and constant pressure on the pedal sets them off.
TIA

May just need to replace the buttons on the steering wheel. If it works the same way as it does in the full size trucks, the switches get a 5 volt signal from the PCM, pressing a button modifies the signal going back to the PCM, to clue it in to which button you are pressing. You might get real lucky, and just need to clean the contacts.... (if that is even possible..... don't know if they come apart in any condition to go back together....)

Yep, wore out wheel buttons. Easy fix. Horn/airbag comes out with two torx screws on the backside, then the buttons have 2 torx screws.
