Default need help wining sound heard when accelerating torque converter???

my 2004 dodge Dakota club cab SLT (.4.7 v-8 eng )with 399,000 miles on it( same factory motor and tranny) has started making a wining sound when accelerating ( at the moment I am limiting any freeway driving and taking it real easy on it )and yes the rpms are riding hi at 70 miles a hr I'm now pulling 2.5 to 3,000 rpms .I can guess it has something to do with my transmission but it "never over heats" .(There is a burnt oil smell of some kind I detect when exiting the truck after driving) ..I'm pretty Shure its the torque converter and about to order a new one but wanted to get some other (Dakota Gen II) owners input on it from there passed experiences.is this a waste of time and I should take it in to the tranny guy ((I don't have piles of cash lying around ) or can I fix it by installing new torque converter my self ?
