Default fast idle

1997 Dakota with the 3.9L V6. not my daily driver but I do drive it everyday to take my dog on her run down to the river every afternoon. I cranked it up yesterday and it wants to idle at about 2000 rpm. I thought it would settle down after I drove it a few minutes but 30 minutes later I put it neutral and no change in the idle speed. any idea on where to start looking? thanks

See if the throttles are closing all the way. If not, find what is holding them open.

If that isn't it, check and see if the IAC well has a bunch of crap in it. It may hold the IAC open to the point you get that high idle. (simply cleaning it should solve that......)

If neither of those helps, likely got a pretty significant vacuum leak somewhere.

thanks for the reply, sorry to take so long to acknowledge it. the dang thing is OK now but I don't know why or how. I checked the items you suggested and all looked good. the fast idle was there every evening for 2 or 3 more days, and then one evening it wouldn't idle at all. just kept cutting off unless I held the gas pedal down a bit. the next day it was back to normal. idled just like always and has been every since. go figure....
