Default Gear indicator issues

Ok everyone I have a 2nd Gen. 2001 Dakota SLT 4 Door 5.9L 2 wheel drive. The transmission decided at the beginning of last month it wasn't going to do anything anymore whatsoever. So I began the search for another 46RE & found one from a guy who was parting out his truck that had broke in half off roading . His truck was a 2001 2500 with the 5.9L & 46RE transmission. However his transmission was the old type of NSS round plug and mine was the New black square type. So after doing the modification to the case of the new trans and swapping out the valve body. As well as flushing the system I installed the transmission and now when you move the shifter you can actually feel it go into each gear which is great. Here's the issue, the dash indicator shows N for Park, D for Reverse, 1 for Drive, 1 for 2nd, & 1 for 1. How do I fix this? Please any answers would be helpful.

Sounds like a linkage issue. Did you swap over the linkage from the old transmission? Did you take pics of the old one before removing?

Yes I changed over the linkage from my old transmission to the new to me transmission. And the way the shaft is designed it can only fit 1 way. I still have the other linkage components. Are you saying that I should swap it back with the other one?

When I had my '97, I removed the steering column to replace the heater core and a/c expansion coil. I seem to remember the indicator worked off a cable on the shifter on the steering column.

The 2001 Dakota SLT as far as I know doesn't have any adjustments with the digital indicator display. If there is that would be great. Does anyone know if there is. Because I don't want to start tearing the dash apart or the column apart if I don't have to.

How many wires going to the Range sensor on the trans? If it's more than three, adjusting the linkage won't do anything. I would suspect that your kit to 'adapt' the three wire, to five? wire, is the issue, and the sensor isn't positioned properly. Is there any adjustment provided by the swap kit?

No the was no adjustment. Which I feel is a bad design overall. The pain in the *** thing is that the transmission cases are both only about 1-2 months in age of manufacturing. They both came from 2001 trucks. And as many vehicles that Mopar used the 46RE in, you would think that they wouldn't be so damn expensive to replace or rebuild. Especially with as many people that have issues with them.

Could you modify it, so you can adjust it? I suspect it's just a matter of screwing it in or out a bit further, to get it accurate.

The new style sensor in a press in fit with 2 set screws 1 on top & 1 on the bottom. It only goes in so far. I was really hoping someone here might have dealt with this same or similar issue. I really don't want to have to take my truck to Dodge Service center. Last time I took my truck in for a recall, they had the truck for an entire day and the only thing they managed to do was damage the locks on my bed cover. Which was nowhere near what they were supposed to be fixing.
