Engine clicking noise
There is this annoying ticking/clicking noise coming from the front of my engine when I am at idle. If I put the truck in reverse it gets more frequent. It does it when I am stopped at traffic lights. I popped the hood and it seems to be coming from under the belts. I noticed that one of the belts seems to be shifting or twitching with the ticking sound but it isnt the belts? It almost sounds like some type of shifting of the motors that turn the belts It is very loud when the hood is popped. I could be wrong all together but it is annoying?
i dunno if this helps, but IF its a 5.9, i have been told that around 50,000 miles, they start making a ticking noice, and that tis the timing chain and gears and that it is normal. my truck does this, but it is very very subtle. kind of like if u didnt kno it was there, you wouldnt kno it was there. easy way to tell is if u it in your truck, turn everything odd, so all u hear is the motor, and u rev it, the ticking will speed up, but not nessicarily get louder.
Sounds like a pully problem, possibly a water pump going out. I have a 2000 5.9 R/T and at about 50k I had to change the AC clutch and the tensioner pully..at about 75k the water pump went..I would suggest to take it to a shop, or if your going DIY I would at least pick up an automotive stethascop for about $15 and pinpoint the problem.
I had the exact same problem with my dakota. It turned out that where the solenoid was mounted was bent and when the solenoid started working while I was in traffic it made a clicking sound from where it was hitting the firewall.
