clicking noise when moving
I have a 4x4 2004 Dakota with a 4.7L with 71000 miles. Recently it has been making a clicking noise like a stick stuck in a bike spoke when you are moving. It started as a mildly loud noise when accelerating hard but now it is any time you are moving in 2 or 4 wheel drive. I checked for something caught in anything moving, and I put the back on jackstands but could not duplicate the problem. I jacked up each wheel and spun them and still nothing. I am stuck any ideas?
It's hard tp guess where the noise is coming from when u are inside the truck. If it makes the noise at slow speeds, I would consider having someone stand outside the truck and see if they can pinpoint it as you drive. My initial thought was that you might have a joint bad on your drive shaft. If this were the case, you would be able to tell by checking the joints to see if one might feel hot after you have driven, or you might be able to wiggle the shaft and tell if it is really bad. I hope it is something as easy and minor as this. Good luck
I had a similar noise from an 89 K-body Blazer. It was a cracked fly wheel (if my memory is right) in the auto transmission. Twelve years ago it cost about $300 at a tranny shop to have it replaced. But the noise was exactly how you described yours. Good Luck!
I just diagnosed same problem, my drivers side u-joint is starting to go, will be changing it out this week, started with the click and depending on what angle the joint was at I could see the gap between the caps, they are pretty cheap though which is the good new and depending on how your truck is used will determine how easy it comes off.
