Cold Air Intake

RE: Cold Air Intake
I have just purchased a K&N FIPK from Crutchfield.com....It was the cheapest I found, and they're only charging me $3 for 3 day ground by UPS. My friend has an AEM Cold Air Intake, but it whitles on his 5.9L. Most would say who cares, due to the 12 HP gain, but another friend of mine has the K&N on his 4.7L. Needless to say, about the same HP gain, without the whistle. Don't get me wrong, it still has the "Low rumble" that really performs from 3000 RPM and Up. I have a flowmaster 40 series cat back dual, with the FIPK on its way, with an AIRAID throttle spacer. I'll keep ya posted in about a week!

RE: Cold Air Intake
Ok the air intake system has been installed and was a pain, I ordered the one listed for the 2004 4.7 and when installing it we found out it was like 3" short off center to connect to the intake when the whole thing was assembled so I called airaidsale.com they in turn called airaid...come to find out this works for all but 2004 4.7 built late in 2004 there was a change...of course they didn't tell me this when i ordered it.....so we modified the tube a bit to get it into place......it really sounds nice but.....when you hot rod around for an hour I found out I was getting a whole 8.1 MPG HEHE that sucks but oh well guess I have to not hot rod it

this is what i did to my dakota w/ 4.7, just go down to autozone and but one 90* elbow and a 4" extension(spectre products) and buy any air filter w/ a 3" inlet and you have an intake

that looks shiny and was most likely pretty cheap, but you forgot to replace the most important part. To gain any power from a new air intake you need to get rid of the silencer box. Shouldn't be too hard, just one more elbow and you can strap it straight to the throttle body.

RE: Cold Air Intake
You should see your average mpg jump by about 2mpg after two tanks of gas. This is about the length of time it takes for the computer to get used to all that air coming in. You should have also picked up another 15hp from the kit. Be careful with the lead foot, remember gas isn't cheap anymore. I have a home grown kit that made the same results as the professional kit. http://www.cardomain.com/id/Cookmans

RE: Cold Air Intake
OK 2 tanks thru, took a freeway trip today using cruise control as much as I could had to do 1/2 of the way back in the San Francisco Bay traffic but even with this stop and start and getting frustrated at slow drivers and getting on it a few times round trip I got 20.8 MPG I am amazed becuase no matter what I did in my old 2003 Dakota 3.9L I was never able to get better than 16 MPG......thx for all the advice now for the next mod

I haven't seen pics of any CAI's in this thread yet.
kikoy- you should really wrap your intake with header wrap to prevent the intake charge from absorbing heat radiated off the metal intake piping. Better yet replace it with a composite material. Then of course the heat shield to prevent hot air from the radiator and exhaust manifold from being drawn in.
