high rpms

I have a 97 Dakota SLT 3.9L with 24,000 miles on it and it takes until about 3,000 rpm to shift out of first gear. Just wondering if anybody else has the same situation and why it waits so long to shift into 2nd. Please reply with any suggestions. Thanks
