Can anyone tell me where the tension pulley is?[:@] I am having trouble running hot and a well intentioned neighbor took a bolt off one of the pulley's and now I think my belt is too loose. I don't think it's the bolt he took off because it doesn't move but I think it loosened up just enough to cause a problem. By the way, After driving about 30 miles my radiator is still as cool as it was when I started the engine. Which is why I think the water pump may not be getting turned by the belt.

 

On mine it is right to the left of the belt, but don't quote me on that because we have different trucks. You can certainly look there though.
I'm sure someone will do the research for you and let you know exactly.

 

Well if the belts too loose, then you're power steering will be affected also. Does it steer hard? And WHY would you let a neighbour touch the truck? (Dont let him anymore since he probably is brain dead when it comes to mechanical things).


2 things to check after determining if the belt has proper tension. Thermostat and/or water pump may be bad.


BTW the tensioner is the pully between the alternator and the waterpump. Its right next to the alternator on teh right side of it. Cant miss it.

 

One minor correction: the routing goes from the alternator, to tensioner, to crank pully, than to water pump.

Thanks, the diagram will help a lot. It turns out the bolt he took off is the Tensioner pulley. I'll have to find a way to make it tighter. I just put a 180deg t-stat in in and If this does not help I will have to check into either the radiator or the water pump.

 

what does a 180 t-stat do? how much are they? anyone have any improvement with one?
