Default bought a flowmaster 50 series..

i didn't want anything crazy on my exhaust and i wanted to keep everything in the stock location so i just had a muffler installed. the guy at the muffler shop definitely knew what he was talking about.. he lifted the truck and pointed out the stock mandrel bends and 2.5 inch pipes and told me that the stock catalytic converter was a hi-flow model. also since I'm in California its illegal to modify the exhaust between the Y-pipe and cat. so basically the only 2 places to improve my exhaust were the muffler and headers, everything else would be cosmetic. i opted for the flowmaster 50 because i wanted it to sound normal inside while making long trips on the freeway. the end result is my is that the exhaust is as close to the stock decibel level as i can tell only it sounds a little deeper at idle. a normal person probably wouldn't even notice, and past 2k RPM you cant hear the exhaust at all. i didn't notice any performance difference and the sound is negligible. I'm thinking that i probably could have gone with a 40 series and hoping that some headers will kick up the volume a bit on this new system

Hi Kurby, I would and of course this is me talking.....go back and tell them this is not what you expected and ask them to swap out to a 40 if you are not happy.....Marco muffler here clamped in a 50 so I could hear it and then the 40 and gave me a choice as you know I went with a 40...that was on my 03 V6 so when I did my 04 V8 it was a 40 no questions asked but the sound of the 40 is about 15%-20% louder outside at low speed only a bit different inside the cab not like you can hear it over the radio unless you have all your windows down and are flooring it....once you are on the freeway over 50 mph you can only hear it for the most part in the cab when you give it some gas....it is just a nice low tone and does not even make enough sound to warrent adjusting your radio sound level......in a nutshell you have 3 baffles in the 50 and the 40 has 2 baffles which in a ruff guess would be about 33% less restriction, that along with the CAI gave me a clean 3 more MPG and a nice performance boost.

That is the info I have been looking for. I am going to add a muffler to my dakota rt, but was unsure of what to choose. I think I am going to go ahead and go with the 40. The stock exhaust is probably already pretty close to the sound of a 50. Its always nice to have a little rumble available when you care to hear it.... Thanks

I just put a standard 40 on mine after some good advice here and talking to the business owner about the different models of 40’s and the expected sound levels. I could not be happier. I just sat and turned it on and off for several minutes just to listen to it fire up. It’s a low powerful sound perfect for these trucks. And the thing that surprised me is at low RPM’s it rumbles down Main Street and turns heads, but at highway speeds I don’t even notice it. It’s no louder than the radio, or tires, or cai. Oh, and when you come up on a stop light and drop it into 1st to let the engine slow it down, damn that sounds cool.

i honestly think the 50 series would be an acceptable OE replacement

On my '99 R/T, I put a 40 series Flowmaster. 3 inch in/out. Had 3" from cat back. Had chrome Mopar headers up front and a 14"X3" K&N intake. Sounded great.

Glad to see you went back and got what you were looking for......it is hard to know ahead of time what those things are gonna sound like on your truck and before you know it the muffler is on and welded in place.....I never get tired of that sound.
