Hard steering on 2000 SLT, 4x4, 4.7 Liter

Ok. I think that was it. After I dumped a cup of 5-W30 on the lower knuckle of the shaft it gradually started to loosen up and now it steers normally. 
So is it a situation where I just have to keep greasing it every time it gets stiff or will I have to replace the shaft?
If that's the problem, it will only be a temporary fix.
