He basically removed the front hose off the airbox and ran a hose to the front of the truck by the radiator. That way the hose from the airbox now draws colder air from outisde the engine compartment.
I myself had already ordered the K&N FIPK so I ran the same hose, but instead of to the airbox, the hose just runs to the front of the cone filter to push colder air onto it. Plus it helps keep water out of the intake on those misty mornings.
Some used hose from home depot, some from other sources. I bought a airhose kit from Pepboys as the hose flexed like a drinking straw does, it is flexible, but keeps its form and is not just all flimsy.

back to the cat converter thing. i was on a dakota forum and cutting off the cat is like a very controversal thing. some say its great....others say its not good at all. does it just depend on the vehicle or are people just talking and not knowing anything about what they are suggesting??
Removing the cat will reduce the restriction in the exhaust, but you're also losing your emissions compliance and if pressed can result in you getting a $10k fine, iirc. I went through a State inspection on my 5.0 and they didn't care that it didn't have cats, had 40-series flowmasters (which, btw, are really loud without cats), a non-emissions lumpy *** cam, heads, intake manifold, CAI, MAF, and so on.
Some people say that the OEM cat is a high-flow unit. I don't know about that. It seems that the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 ALL have the same 2.5" diameter exhaust though, which is fine for the 3.9 but not so fine for the 5.9, imho. Exhaust is one thing I really want to do to my truck.
