Water on passenger side floor
Hi all,
I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport which has the problem of collecting water on the passenger side floorboard.
I have been through all the previous posts that I could find on this board about this issue and have found two basic theorys: plugged air conditioner compressor drain line and/or leaking window.
I started out looking for the ac comp drain line but had no luck. According to the descriptions on the board, it should be a small tube coming out of the firewall behind the compressor that is two inches long. The only thing even close to this that I've found is a small black tube about 3/8" diameter that comes out of the firewall but it then runs down the side of the engine compartment over the right-front wheel well and then back into a small device sitting on the side of the radiator that has what appears to be some sensor wires attached to the top of it. Is this it?
I did more experimenting trying to find the source of the water so I first threw away the old absolutely-soaked floormat. I then totally dried, shampooed, and vaccumed the carpet. I then bought some new rubber floormats that would be subject to water absorption and then laid some dry paper towels down over the top of it. After all that, I drove the truck for 3 days (approximately 200 miles) running the AC the entire time. The paper towels stayed absolutely dry. I then drove the truck for a full afternoon in heavy rain and the towels still stayed dried. When I filled up with gas this morning, I decided the throw the paper towels away. I lifted up the rubber floor mat and the capet was totally wet again beneath it. This tells me that the water isn't coming from directly above under the dash. It must be flowing in from around the edge of the capet. Would this point still to the AC or a leaky windshield or something else?

download the service manual for the dakota. i believe the ac drain runs underneath the passenger side carpet beneath the glove box. i am not certain though and i dont have the manual in front of me right now.
mine leaked too. exept mine was the heatercore, it leaks in the same spot. I have rubber dodge floor mats in mine and I never noticed the water until I lifted my mat.[:@] I'm gonna attempt to change the heatercore this weekend, and I hope I dont break anything taking it apart.

FWIW had a similiar problem with water collecting on carpet area under dash. Dealership body man repaired my rear sliding window seal and problem solved. Body man said the water collects in the front floorpans because it is the lowest point in the cabin. Rear carpet was also wet where the water leaked by. Water hose and someone inside the truck may find you a fix. Good luck.

Mine is a 98 model but I just bought it 2 months ago. I got it home here in NC and just befor the tropical storm hit a month ago I noticed the passenger side carpet was soaked. I parked in the garage untill the storm was over and then pulled up the carpet and dried it all out. I tooke the interior side panel off by the door and the rear seat belt and panel off in the back under the window and the one that goes in the corner around the rear side window. I had my son get in the car and I took a hose and started spraying in the front all over then around the door, nothing. As soon as I sprayed aroun the rear sliding window he motioned me to stop. What it was is the metal was not properly welded and sealed from the factory below the rear window. There is a seam if you follow the side of the window straight down a few inches you will see where the metal is overlaped and on my truck the passenger side I could see where the seam had enough space I could slip a piece of paper in it so it is not real noticable but when I sprayed it with the hose it sprayed water directly in to the rear corner I mean I could see it spraying in. I used windshield sealer and it has been dry ever since. Another thing to check is pull your jack out and see if it or where it sets is wet, mine was all wet. Hope this helps, if you are not sure let me know I will send a pic where I sealed it and I read where someone else had the exact same defect as mine.
