I have a 2002 Dakota SXT. It is dark red, but the bumper and part of the sides are grey plastic. Would there be anything against me painting them the same color as the rest of my truck? I don't really like the look of the grey.

Where could i get the paint thats the same color?

I read somewhere that its not paintable because its plastic. true?

 

it wont be a problem painting the area with the right prep work done. the issue would be making the paint not chip and flake due to the elasticity of the plastic. i believe dupont makes a plastic oriented paint as well as a few other manufacturers. i just hope you can find one that matches your truck's color.

 

What kind of prep work?

 

like pulling it off the door... sanding it.... msot likely wet sanding instead of dry... primer.. then paint... i could be forgetting some stuff but thats an idea

 

well, you will need to sand the area you are wanting to paint and then prime it. you will need to find a primer that will work with a surface that will be moving. if you want to do it cheap, go down you your local hardware store and pick up some spray cans of plastic primer and plastic paint of your desired color. lay down some thick coats of plastic primer (allowing time in between coats for drying. also keep in mind laying several thin coats will give you a better finished product than 2 or 3 thick ones) then sand the primer once it has dried with some very fine (and i mean very fine for plastic primer) sanding paper. once you have got it sanded, lay down several even coats of paint. let it dry and you are ready to roll player!

 

As virus pointed out, THE most important part to a good paint job is the prep work. Clean the area, sand it, prime it.

You can get paint at AutoZone, but it gets tough to pick the exact shade. You can also get it from a stealership.

 

i just want to make sure that everyone realizes that the most important part of this project, besides prep, is that you HAVE TO GET PAINT AND PRIMER THAT WILL WORK ON FLEXIBLE MATERIAL. sorry to yell, but i just dont want people to have to do hard work twice.

i had my rear splash guards painted to match and the body shop i used has a special primer with the elasticity stuff in it. you cant get it a pepboys or any other auto place. must be ordered from either body shop or dealer. also i am going to get my frt bumper and side view mirros to match truck. i also have the gray color on my o5
