Default performance advice

Folks,

I'm new to the performance enhancements and need a little advice. I have purchased a K&N CAI which should be arriving any day now. I was hoping to buy a muffler (flowmaster 40 series delta generation) and was wondering if it was acceptable practice to piecemeal the exhaust system or buy a CAT-back system directly? Does it save money to buy the system piece by piece and have it installed (forget about doing it myself) or buying the CAT-back system? I appreciate anyone's advice and thanks given in advance.

I always prefer getting a muffler then having a muffler shop build the rest. Bolt on kits are nice, but you can often get a custom job done for less money.

I agree with horatio, I bought a magnuaflow highflow cat and a magnaflow muffler and took it to a guy that does it on the side and saved a bundle of money and still looks great.

Warning about the K&N Kit, they have recently redesigned the kit because they were previously breaking the air hats. If there is not a section of flex hose on the air tube, then return it buy something different. I currently run an AFE kit on 5.9 Q-cab, really like it compared to the K&N, after two years, no problems. Was harder to install, but seems to seal from the heat better.

As to exhaust, I have a Gibson dual sport cat-back that I purchased and installed myself $600, about two years ago I had it modified, previously both tips exited on the right rear, I had them split by a local shop for about $75.00.

From what I have found you can buy the parts and have a good muffler shop install and customize for less than half of the "KITS" weather it be Gibson or Flowmaster of etc., I have a Flowmaster 40 with single in/out and a nice chrome tip for $151.00 installed all bought from the muffler shop, the kit that has these parts is part #17414 goes for $353.33 directly from Flowmaster and you still have to pay to have it installed.
