one side the adjuster reaches the gear on the lower spreader, but on the other side it does not reach, wish I could give a better description but that is about the best I can do, and one more thing, how do ya get the drum back on once you have replaced the shoes?

im pretty sure it has to be out of adjustment.. like the shoes cannot be spread out... smack the drum on.. and behind the dust shiled there sould be a rubber boot in place to take off and you can adjust by turning that start wheel... thats the genral conception... if the rears are automatic adjusters just get that drum on.. and tires blah blah blah... find a nice open parking lot..... reverse... lay on the gas then slam the rear brakes... that should do the trick.. good luck

There should be an adjuster on the pad spreader. right in the middle of them actually. You need to push that all the way back and then push both pads together as much as possible. Then you should be able to put the drum on over the pads. It may not push in by hand, you may have to use a flat head screw driver and it will push right in.
