Mine is 01 6cyl 3.9 an runs great 130k, but the darn fan control resistor has a history of burning out in these .-last one I had I went thru 2 ,an bolts on exhaust manifold an ball joints known to give trouble .
Engine great though ! Tranny needed a new overdrive unit .
I'm sure I'm a little late answering. I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7 v8 engine. This is one tough truck. I have 482000 MI. This truck has been totaled twice I've had to do nothing to the engine but I did replace the transmission after the second accident not because I had to but I felt it would be safer. Other than that the only thing I had to do was put a used bed on the back end. I guess this is just answer a few of the questions as to how many miles should someone expect out of a Dodge Dakota. I turn the key it starts right up and it honestly purrs. It has had its regular maintenance done to it so that is probably a big reason why it's lasted so long. One more thing I had heavy duty springs put on the back end because I have what is called a cold plate unit which is about a thousand pounds bolted to the bed of the truck. So for 15 years this truck has hauled around a thousand pounds in the bed of it and still runs great. I have become a Dodge believer
2000, 4.7 260,000, runs great, engine alittle weak, and gas mileage dropped, i got a new truck make not part of this forum, lol turned dodge into a farm truck and get it on the road at least once a month to blow everything out and run it., just goes to show if you take care of it they will last.
2003 Dak with 4.7L. Currently at 298,000 miles. All original drive train, which is still very smooth and powerful. Driven daily, no issues. I could get in and drive cross-country with no issues right now.
I run 0W-20 full syn in it and the full mark on the dipstick is the low mark, as far as I'm concerned... meaning I've never let the oil level drop.

My boyfriend has a 2001 5.9 dodge dokata. And his mileage 423810. Still original transmission and motor. He says he has another 400 thousand miles to go.
Is that a manual or automatic transmission? I'm looking at that same truck with 250k miles. Asking about maintenance records, but it's an automatic so I wonder how long those tend to last.
that depends on a lot of things..... can't necessarily say that/
but as far as high miles I have had 5, 87-96s 3 of which I kept til well over 200K..... I kept the engine out of my 92 with 226K because "I know where its been" currently driving a 96 4wd with 213k and counting... and increasing by at least 70 miles a day.
just bought a 99 with a 3.9 and had 105k on it when I got it, 112k now, only 3 months later so far so good.... Ive now had 3 each, 318 V8 trucks (all coincidentally club cabs) and now with the 99, 3, 3.9 trucks 2 reg cabs, the 99 is my 1st 6 cyl club cab, you couldn't give me a quad cab with its uselessly short bed..... different story....
I will say this.... I'd buy one with either engine (besides 4.7, have ZERO experience with them) but between 3.9 and 318, yeah.... BUT MPG is nearly identical between them, (2 of my V8s were actually Better on gas than any of my V6s, and the one 4wd I have owned, is about even on MPG with the 3.9 2wd
I will say this.... if you pull a trailer even a light jon boat or pop up, you WILL miss the extra 2 cylinders..... unless you've never had a V8.
I also have a 01 Durango with the 360 that I'm just now having to replace the engine at 258K..... now mind you, I have NEVER owned ANY vehicle from brand new. And I never will. I have no idea how many people have had these trucks before me.
the only way I would own a brand new truck (not interested in anything besides a Dodge) is if I could go out tomorrow and buy either a brand new 96-older Dakota or 93-older D or W series Dodge.... but since I can't, I won't be buying brand new. I'm always looking for a clean 93-older, full size--- either 1/2 or 3/4 ton Dodge.

I’ve got an 01 dakota sport with the 4.7 v8. It’s got 285000 on it and it doesnt miss a beat. Gotta be one of the smoothest running trucks I’ve seen. I’m using it as a beater for the field and it still just won’t die
