Default Tent Trailer

I was wondering if anyone in here has hauled a tent trailer with a Dakota. I have a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7 L and I was wondering how it would handle it. It says it can haul up to 2000 lbs. without modification so i figure it should be no problem, I just need to get a ball for the bumper to tow...any insight on this?

i wouldnt tow from the bumper. get a tow package. the last thing you want is to see your trailer fading off in the distance with your bumper attached by that nice new chrome ball.

yea your better off buying a hitch..... i got mine from jcwhitney.com for about $130... not bad at all... took me and a buddy a half hour to install it...but the bolts that come in the installation kit are grade 5... not really what you call tough.. you may wanna pick up some grade 8 bolts from your local hardware store, if you go my route

I tow all kinds of trailers with my dak, Including my ten foot tent trailer. Seems to tow fine to me, never really struggles.

98Dodger4x4 and offroadgolfer, do you have a hitch or do you just use the bumper with a ball?

my dad hauled alot of stuff with his bumper hitch till he over loaded it and it started cracking.. he didn't have any problems hauling.. it was just the bumper. like everyone else said get a reciver hitch..also i have a 92 dodge dakota and i know it was illgal and not smart but i hauld a 92 D350 single wheel cummins 5 spd it was just 8 miles both ways. (was washing the frame where the bed sat. because we was putting another one on and it needed cleaned..it pulled the truck just fine i had a couple decent hills to clim too and it just pulled right up it. it was a 318 and you have the 4.7 so you have more power anyways...you should be fine if youre in hilling terrain kick the Od off.

be safe-get a hitch. i got mine off ebay for 45.00-last i towed was a 25 ft i beam construction race ca rtrailer with a 1983 caprice on it.i have a 3.7 in mine - no problems whatsoever pulling it.also get a trailer wiring kit-it plugs in to your existing light harness at your tail lights.
