Default rear end making noise

I have a noise coming from the rear end, took it in for inspection and the guy said it is definetly something in the rear, but he will have to take it apart to find the problem. He thinks it is a bad bearing or something because it is a noise that is dependent on speed and it doesn't matter if I am turning or not. Has anybody had this problem? How can you tell a bad bearing by looking at it while it is still installed?? or would there be excessive play??

its not a clicking or grinding or whining, its more of a humming or droning noise, when slowing down it sounds like a turbine spooling down maybe?? hard to describe, but definetly changes tone with speed, but cornering has no effect

yea bearing failure the only thing comming to mind, since its whining noise depends on speed

i am having sort of a similar problem with my 2000 dakota. i cant really explain the noise, i guess it is a kind of whining. i checked my rear differential fluid when i got it and it was pure crap it had a milky color to it kind of like in some of the oil filler caps just not as thick. anyway i changed that and the noise was still there. changed the u joints, no effect. the noise increases with speed from start to stop but the noise is a pulsing sound that gets faster and faster until it becomes a solid sound. this is the closest post to what mine is like. so i figured i would just post up and see what you all think. if it is a bearing how hard are they to replace and how much would it cost approx?

your axle bearing is shot. they have to tear into the rearend because they need to find out if it is the left or right side. if it is not covered under warrenty expect to pay alot. big job if they need to remove complete assem. from truck
