Sounds like a choke or iac kind of problem.

Default RE: problem

i have a similar problem. my truck doesn't always like to start for me. it tends to happen in the winter but not necesarilly on the cooldest days. When i turn the key to start the vehicle it will fire up, the rpm gauge will rise and then imeadiatly fall back down to nothing, and it dies. if i pump the gas pedel when i start the vehicle i can get it to stay running, (roughly at first). I have been able to get moving by starting it in N holing the rmp's at about 1000 and the shifting into drive. at that point i have to give it some gas and move foreward about 5-10 ft. Once it is going the problem is solved. i can stop, go in reverse or park, turn it off and back on just fine.

any ideas?
