Default heater core / dash out pics

I replaced the heater core in my 98 RC sport.

these things aren't too bad to work on..

I'm working on a write up. That'll take me at least 10x as long as the job though.

where is the heater core?

Normally sits in a box that mounts to the firewall in front of the shifter.

yup, and theres cars/trucks much worse then the dakota. i did one in an ford ranger that took me 6 hours and i knew exactly what i was doing with all the correct tools. the worst part was that you could see the plastic box that it was contained in just from sitting in the passenger seat. if they had added a simple access panel i could have dont it in like 20 minutes. instead you have to drop the steering wheel and disassemble the whole dash and everything that connects to it.

when I did my heatercore I didnt take that much out. I left the whole steering column in there. I just had to drop it abit. and I left my seats in there too. mine took me a weekend to do. I took my time doing mine. and since mine is leaking again (faulty heatercore) im gonna have to do mine again. I think I might take it to the dealer this time, so then if it still leaks then it will be under warranty. but I dont know yet. have you thought of making a trap door on your fire wall to make it easy access to your heater core? thats what i'll be doing if I do mine over the winter.

When you change this one, go get your coolent flushed out. Then do it every 6 months for a few more times. Seems to be working on mine now that I do this. 1.5 yrs and no problems again. Before I went through 5 cores in 2.5 yrs.

Wow. No wonder it costs so much to get it done when they go bad.

yeah, it really isn't that bad of a job. i didn't have to take out my seats, but i have an aftermarket drivers seat. i didn't want to get it dirty, etc. the dash comes out pretty easy and i decided not to remove the collumn trim... since the connectors are all under the trim, i just took it out with the dash.

looking back i could do this job in 4 hours if i had to do it again.

Is it possible to change it without totally pulling the black box from the firewall? Id really hate to disconnect my ac and have to get it charged
