Alright i have had a lot of work done to my truck and a whole lot done to the transmission. Come to find out that the trans mission has a bypass valve that will bypass the torque converter where most of the trans fluid is stored. This is so works just like the thermastat on your engine. This is what makes the sound you are hearing i did a full rebuild on mine and had a larger pump and and valve housing. Now the sound in mine is twice as loud and almost sounds like gear on gear timing or a small blower. i hope this info has helped you.

Yes it is completely normal. If hear a clattering noise with the whistle you will know if you hear it. That means you are pretty much screwed and if you do not have a warranty you are about to spend some money. Mine is so load that i can actually hear it over my blower when i sit inside my truck. if i stand outside i cant heat it over the blower. Good luck man and if you need anymore help you can hit me up at my personal email. This is my forth dakota that i have fully rebuilt the engine and tranny from the ground up. It took me a long time to learn what the hell was goin on on the first one, but now its like nothing to work on it. So if you get the chance to do some big work on it i would do so you can learn. Just make sure you do your research so you dont mess something up.
