Default Cat Convert Locations?

Looking under my new to me 04 Dak SLT 4.7l 2wdI can see NO Cat convert (or what I recognize as one.) I do see to what I would normaly consider pre-cats up near the exhaust manifolds. My question is on this model is this all there is, or did the PO chop off the converter and I just bought problems[:@]. I know there has been at least some exhaust work done as there is a header stle 3-bolt reducer just before the muffler, and there is no tailpipe, just a turndown in the tailpipe.

TIA

Do you have a picture? It is a little confusing the way you are describing it. You SHOULD have a cat on your truck, and it will obviously be located before the muffler, and also before the downstream O2 sensor.

I'll try to get a few pics tonight or tommorow, stuck at work for the moment.
In the meantime I'll try to be a little clearer. There are two bulges (for lack of a better word) in the exhaust pipes one on each side very near the manifold. There is an 02 sensor before and after each one, and thus I assumed that these were in fact the cats. They are just unlike any that I had seen before (ie a big, near muffler sized, obstruction in the exhaust pipe and usually further downstream.

In retrospect this seems a better place for them, as they would light off sooner and be better protected, I was just expecting this monstrosity in the exhaust as on all my previous vehicles.

thanks for the quick response

i can tell you that the cats are much smaller then they used to be, probably less then 6-7" in diameter
