v6 dakota tranny
Hi, I just bought a 2000 dakota v6 auto. When its cold the truck has trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd and you have to kind of let off the gas for it to shift because it will rev really high. Once the truck is up to temp. it shifts normally. Tranny fluid is still red and is not low but may be a little bit high. Not sure what the previous owner put in for fluid but im just wondering if it works fine once warmed up if it could be something else. Just want to get some opinions before I start changing things (fluids, etc.)
Any helps is appreciated
Also I'll add that I am mechanically inclined to work on my truck, I've been swapping engines and building turbocharged civics for years, just this is my daily driver.
Thanks

So is everyones truck doing this? I looked in my owners manual and in the maintenance schedule for miles on the truck there seemed to be a few tranny oil changes which also said band adjustment. Maybe we need to get the bands adjusted? I checked the cable to the tranny from the throttle body, seemed okay, doesnt seem to have much tension or resistance coming from the tranny though. Anyone know?
now that i look back at this i realize that mine is a 5 speed. Now i think its not normal. I would try changing the tranny fluid and see if that helps. I do know that the bands need to be adjusted every now and then.
eric_121,
mine is a 5 sp. as well, and when its cold outside it doesnt let me shift into second and its very very stiff switching gears in general. It usually gets better once it warms up...is this what you are experiencing? Im just trying to make sure that there is nothing wrong with mine for doing this. Also, can you help me locate where to check transmission fluid?

I have the same problem, my mechanic said the shift points were off, so I took it to the dealership and there was an update from mopar to correct this. It is better since the updated my computer but it's still there so it looks like were stuck with this one.
