Default Towing truck

Hi all. I am curious about towing a 2000 dakota behind a motorhome. It has the all time 4wd transfer case in it. Now everyone that I talk to says that you have to tow it with all the wheels off the ground. Wouldn't you be able to just put the transfer case in neutral though and tow with a tow bar on it? If not, what is the purpose of have neutral on the t.c.? Used to own a Ford and I know on that on those you could just do that and there wouldn't be a problem. Just looking to be able to tow a vehicle behing that motor coach so that we have a vehicle at hunt camp. Thanks in advance.

i have nothing solid to back this up with but i heard that when the differential is in neutral the lubrication system doesnt work. it might have been in the owners manual. i also know that tow truck drivers always pick up AWD and 4X4 vehicles with a flatbed because all wheels have to be off the ground

I know there would be work invloved, but couldn't you disconnect the rear driveshaft and then tow with front wheels off ground?

According to the owners manual for my 01 you tow on all fours with the transfer case and transmission in neutral.

Thanks all. I don't want to go through all the work of removing the driveshaft. I also know that tow drivers tow wiith all 4 off the ground because it is 4wd as it has been towed twice. But i am on the same page as 01Kadoka. Is there any difference between the 2000 and the 02? I am thinking that this would have to work fine but can't get definite answers from anyone. Don't want to end up screwing everything up and having to replace it all.

thats how I would tow it. maybe hook everything up and go around the block or something and see how everything is doing after that
