RE: K&N or Airaid
same here, the heat shield makes a big diff. my k/n cost 212.00 on ebay, install was simple and the responce was improved. also the k/n will let you relocate your iat sensor. the airaid is metal, and a little harder to drill out

RE: K&N or Airaid
The Airaid I have is plasic tube and the only metal is the housing the mounts on top of the stock air box, (making a complete sealed coldair connection when the hood is closed), the K&N I had on my 03/3.9L Dakota was a metal chrome tube so both K&N and Airaid make metal and plastic.....guess the point would be the metal tubes pick up heat that the plasic ones do not.....and from a performance and visual K&N and Airaid are identical......and same price for the most part......my pref. is Airaid.

RE: K&N or Airaid
I used to have the K&N FIPK kit on my 5.9 Dakota. Too many problems had to replace the tube three times. K&N finally admitted a year ago that there was a defect on recalled/replaced many of them. However, in Jan. '05 I installed an AFE CAI kit, I think it's 100x better than the K&N. All plastice, air tube is flexible and allows for engine movement (torque), easy to install and fits better. The air filter is kind of a bitch to remove for cleaning, but I also have a wrap on it so cleaning is a once a year item.
