Default Magnaflow & Superchip???

I need your help....please,

From another post: I just put a K&N Cold Air Intake on my 2003 4.7ltr4x4 Quad CabSLTlast Friday. So farI can tell that it's a little more responsive, butnot by much. Thebiggest differenceseems to bethe noise. There's a constantHum coming fromunder the hood, and you can hear the air being sucked into the motornow. I'm still going to put a Flowmaster with duals out the back on it, so hopefullythe horsepowerwill be more obvious after that.

When I was researchingit, I was torn between K&N, Mopar, and Airaid. I went with K&N because a buddy of mine has the Airaid, and he said he wouldn't recommend it(he just didn't feel like itwas doing anything)!!!
And I didn't go with Mopar because of the wait (Iwould have had toof ordered it, and waiteda week). I could have spent a lot less for theAiraid, and a little more for theMopar. So for now, I'm hoping I made the right decision.

My questions to you:

1st- What's the humming noise? Did I do something wrong, or does everytruck that has this done to ithave it?

2nd- What muffler would you go with? I'm looking for performance gains, and a good sound. I don't want it to be overwhelming in the cab, but I do want it to sound MEAN out the back. FYI: I can get both for the same price.

3rd- Does anyone that did this to their truck use it for towing? If so, does it make a difference? I tow a 4000+ lb trailer in the summer, so I want to know if I should expect anything out of it. Last summer it barely made it up some ofthe hills without dying on me.

4th- Would a Superchip make a difference when it comes to towing? Is it worth the money???

All these question revolve around the 4.7 liter engine. But if you have experineces with other engines that you feel might help, please feel free to chime in.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I got the 5.2 but when you put a cold air intake on you will hear a hissing sound, that is the sound air getting sucked in. its a good sound.also you should expect to get better gas milage too.

I have a magnaflow single in dual out muffler. and it sounds pretty good. you dont get alot of interior noise but when you open up the black window and pour the **** to her it sounds soo sweet.(which is why most of the time my back window is always open)

and you should notice that your truck will tow alot better with those mods. and you will have a better throttle response too.

I find myself in the same boat. I want to increase my towing ability not for load but distance (1300mi) and elevation (3k to 6k). I pull a snowmobile trailer to Wyoming a couple times a year and want to be able to use the cruise sit back and enjoy the ride. And hopefully be able to pass a few gas stations along the way.

If you have ever traveled South Dakota on I90 you may have noticed there is always a head wind (strong) even if you do a U turn I swear the wind blows both directions at the same time there!

Currently in an '02 Qcab 4x4 with 4.7L and 355 gears. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I went toExhaust Specialties today. The guy there deals in both Magnaflow & Flowmaster.Without hesitation...he highly recommended the Magnaflow for my truck. Because the Quad Cab is more cab than truck, he said I would appreciate it more in the long run. And with the muffler being right under my 3 year olds seat, he said the flowmaster would be quite unpleasant for her[]

Performance wise there's not much difference between the two, so Magnaflow it is!!! It'sgetting installedtomorrow. I'll let you know what I think...

Anyone have any input on the Superchip question???

Default Magnaflow & Superchip???

The exhaust is done, and all I can say is "WOW"!!!

What a night & day difference it made. Between theCAI & the Magnaflow, its a totally different truck now. I haven't driven it enough to notice a gas mileage difference, or if thetowing has improved. But I can tell youthat it's got more get up & go now. And boy does she sound pretty

Two (make that three)questions still on thetable:
1st- Does anyone know what the constant hum coming from under the hood is now? It's very loud and annoying, and it wasn't there before I put on the CAI. It will actually continue to hum for a few seconds afterIshutthe motor off.
2nd- Has anyone done the Superchip thing on their 4.7's? If so, was it worth the $$$? Did it help with gas mileage, horsepower, and towing? And is it worth paying the extra $$$ for premium gas when your using it?
Bonus question- My truck (before mods) was only getting anywherefrom 10-13 mpg.The only other things that aren't stockare the 8" wheels & the265 75R 16 All terrain tires I put on it. Should my mpg be this bad, or is there something wrong with it?

i think there are 3 setting on the superchips a towing, a 87 performance and a 91 performance, but dont quote me on that.i dont have one but i have heard that they are awesome. i geussing that your gas mileage should be alittle better that 10-13. i have a 5.9 and i get 12-13mpg

what you want is to increase your efficiency, power can be a result of that and personally i think its the best type of mod. so what your looking for are things that are going to reduce weight, lower drag on the drive train and maximize air flow. things like a CAI, mild exhaust and under-drive pulleys will make power through efficiency. other things to look into would be rocker arms, lighter wheels and synthetic fluids. dont do anything that will add fuel to your motor, avoid bigger injectors or performance chips.

As far as setting the cruise while towing goes, it's not the best idea unless you're wide awake. I wouldn't recommend it at all after dark.

I don't know what kind of mileage you get while towing, or how heavy your load is, but if it's over a couple thousand pounds, your best bet is to turn off the OD and go for it. Or you could swap gears out for some 4.11s and attempt it in OD, but that's the more expensive route. With 3.92s and a 5500 pound trailer I can set cruise in my 5.9 quad cab on flat ground with the OD on and it's got the torque to take slight hills without starting to hunt for gears, but on steeper hills I pop it out of OD. The 4.7 doesn't have quite as much torque though, and you've got taller gears working against you.

to address the OP's latest questions -

1) The stock air intake is designed with resonating chambers and constructed in a manner to eliminate harmonics and noise in general. Aftermarket CAIs do away with that and focus instead on creating the best airflow possible. You're hearing the result of that - sucking noises and harmonic noise. It's nothing bad.

2) I've got a 5.9 and hypertech, but it's definitely worth putting the high octane in. I have noticed a marked increase in my fuel economy while driving in a sane manner. Some day I may even see 300 miles on a tank. I haven't towed anything with mine since the upgrade, but I'll put it back to the Hypertech 87 octane tune and continue to run 91 as towing makes the engine work harder. My next "mod" is to replace my O2 sensor to see if that doesn't help fuel economy and pinging. I'm also going to swap in a 180 t-stat and go 1 heat range colder on my spark plugs. I want to eliminate detonation.

bonus) My mileage in my 99 grand cherokee with the 4.7, quadradrive, and 245 tires was anywhere from 12 (heavy foot in town) to 18-20 (easy cruise on freeway). My 5.9 quad cab gets 10-13 it seems, but I've got a heavy foot and it's not really aerodynamic with the ski rack and Hella Rallye 4000s sticking up over the roof. On the highway if I keep it at 60 I'm now getting 15-17 (after FIPK & hypertech) but at 75+ I'm still getting 12, which is about what I got before.
