Why would my mechanic think there was too much coolant in the reservoir?? I won't be filling it up too much if I fill thru the rad. cap, when the reservoir is full??
Thanks
A: Find a new "mechanic"

B: if I'm understanding what your asking you have to have the system full in the first place to siphon out of the resevwar... it sounds like your system isn't full to me...!!!!!!!!!!!!!ever siphon say gas...same philosophy!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have this same problem. I've come to the conclusion it is a worn out heater core.

Quote from imnothot02: oh nad no it wont suck if it isnt full to begin with fill the radiator

Ok but...if it was filled (radiator)..then it would not need to suck from the reservoir, would it. Kind of a catch 22...The reservoir is for the radiator to draw from when needed ..right??? But, it won't/can't draw from it ,,if there is not enough in the radiator. whaaaaaat

If it's the heater core, then where did all the coolant go, beside in my mechanics siphon tank??

What's the chances that I have a small head gasket leak and the coolant is flowing into the oil pan??

A head gasket leak wouldn't allow coolant into your oil, it would allow oil out of your head.

the heater core probably isnt leaking, but just is just gunked up. I know my dakota in 0degree temps doesnt give off hot air but warm. If the temp is above 32 i get hot air. Could be that the heater core is smaller then whats needed to cool the cab.

I put in about 10 oz of coolant/water mix, into the radiator, ran it for about 15 minutes, capped it and so far so good. I'll go back out tonight (when it's 4 degrees out) and take the cap off to check the level. I was questioning the level of the coolant, so much, because on my 67 Camaro the radiator is full at about 75% on that radiator. That is where the fill line is. Anymore and it flows out of the overflow. I just wanted it to make sense in my mind before I go went out and added more.
As for the head gasket, probably not, the oil on the dipstick is light brown, no smoke from exhaust, and It hasn't been driven around while overheating.
Thanks

You still have to fill your radiator to the top regardless of having a full reservor. my radiator is filled to the brim and my reservor is almost empty. the level never changes
