Default Electric Cooling Fan as a Primary Fan

I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 with the(4.7?) V8 engine

I want to eliminate the clutch fan and just run an electric fan
for the cooling fan to eliminate my power robbing clutch fan.
I am also planning on this giving me better fuel mileage.

Is there anybody here currently doing this?
If so, what kind of fan are you running?
How much CFMdoes it pull?

Any tips, ideas, negative aspects to doing this (other than towing)?

thanks

Ive heard a lot about this. I think it would be a simple job. Just remove the fan clutch and old fan shroud. Buy an electric fan that has a thermostat with it and hook it up. Sounds easy enough. I cant tell you about the CFM but as long as the fan was made for a truck i dont see why i wouldnt hurt. The fan is just used to cool the truck while parking or low speed driving.

one of my teachers has one. he said that he doesnt need to turn it on unless he is stopped. his is controlled by a toggle switch. i want to do the same thing. i found out a few days ago that my clutch fan is making way more noise that it should, so i think i am going to replace it with an electic fan. does anyone know how much hp an electric fan will gain and if mpg will increase.

i dont know the specific numbers but 746 watts are in 1 HP. Maybe your fan would be 1200W who knows. But that sure beats the 15Hp your fan clutch is robbing.

The kits are rather expensive. [:@]

I know it. I think the best thing to do is go to a junk yard and just pick out a fan that matches the dimentions you need and wire it up yourself either with a thermostat or toggle switch.

.

my clutch fan was ruined by the wreck.
I can get a new electric fan/shroud assy.for $50 (3000cfm)...
I canbuy acontrol circuit forless than $30
(including a redundant backup and a relay for the A/C).

A used (or even new) clutch fan willcost way in excess of that.

All in all, I will have $80 in this set up....
and i will eleminate15 lostponies....

this plus a K & N air filter should free up
quite a bit of horsepower and result inless drag
and better fuelmileage.

That is a great deal. Throw the cost of a new belt in there, and it sounds like a good plan. Tell us how it works for you, with part numbers included. I would like to do this myself, but most kits start around $400-$450 for a plug and play unit.

the 'lectric fans work great,
I was lucky enough that mine had one when i got it, It's loud though, but it moves some serious air. I can watch the temp gauge fall when it turns on. but like I said mine is loud, like the 50,000 BTU furnaces at work

They're fine for on-road, just keep tabs on your temp gauge in case the fan fails. They're not so great if you go off road and you like mud.
