Default loose steering---99 Dodge Dakota

Hi all,

I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota sport, with a V6, automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive. It has about 90,000 miles on it. The steering has developed a good inch of play in either direction. I check all of the mechanical linkages and they aren’t loose. The looseness appears to be at the point where the steering column meets the "steering box." Is there something that I can adjust or tighten to take the looseness out of the steering ? A few years back I did have one of my ball joints replaced.

Thanks

A hydraulic rack and pinion will usually always have a little play in it. Check your power steering fluid level.

Sounds like you need to back the jamb nut off on the adjuster and tighten it up. Start searching for saginaw steering slop adjustment in google.

I dont think you can adjust the rack and pinion. I think only the 97 and 98's came with the saginaw box.

but my truck has a lil play in it too. its normal

2WD has rack and pinion and 4WD has the box for the 97-99 years if I remember right, I know my 99 has the box.
