Try www.ring-pinion.com I belive when I bought mine it was $250 or so for the gears and install kit. If it is 4wd you will need to do both axles. And it will varry to have someone install it. Its best to have a profesional install. If it is not done right it can blow apart trust me. I did it. I got mine istalled for 250 with axle removed. I dont know what if you dont remove the axle. Shop around. You can also try www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com for the ring and pinion sets.

I know of two Guys that did the change. One Guy bought gears and had them installed at a shop, cost him over 2000$ including the gears. The front is a PITA to change! The other Guy bought the front and rear axles from a damaged Durango and replaced the complete units at a lower cost. It is a pricey change on the Durango!

I have a 2001 Durango with a 3.55 ratio. My trailer weighs 5800 lbs and that is the max for a 3.55, how much would it cost to change to a 3.92 and would it be worth it. I took a camping trip and it struggled most of the way. The car only has 105,000 miles and I just spent $2000 doing all the 100,000 mile updates. I got 8 or 9 miles per gallon. on the trip. I would think it make my mpg go up slightly, I normally get 17/13

Smile 2nd Gen tow ?

Hi Guys ,
New guy to the site ! Love it !

BTW I miss my 1999 5.9 : (
( rotted away )
Question : I have kind of a different truck I think then most here. I have a 2006 Dodge Durango 5.7 Hemi " TWO " wheel drive ( rear ) with 3:55 gear ratio , VIN says heavy duty suspension ??? - and I,m looking at a 5000 lb RV . It has a hitch on it ( what kind would I need )Can I pull this properly ? Would I need suspension helpers , tranny cooler ? Gear change probably not in my future. I live in New England and as I said its two wheel drive .....if were definitely getting a camper and this truck wont go as is for the most part I,d probably buy a new truck ...though I love this baby ! Sorry for all the questions but this is something I just started thinkin about so .... thanx you in advance, The Klown

If yours has a factory hitch with the seven pin (round) connector you should be all set up. 5000lbs should be nothing for you to handle. I have a 2005 5.7L 2WD with 3.55 and on occasion pull around 6000 lbs and get 12mpg doing so, longest trip has been 400 miles one way. Use "tow" mode on the shifter, air the rear tires appropriately, and try to keep it under 80.

You shouldn't need anything but a Class IV ball mount (10k+ rated) and a 1-1/4" shank 10k+ rated ball. 3" drop or so on the ball mount. 5000lbs is Class III territory which is cheaper to purchase tow gear but might as well use something capable of what the rest of the system is.

Default hello

Thank you Steiners for all that info - !!
Good point with the trailer hitch - it does not have the 7 pin - it has a 4 pin - Anyway I can tell if this hitch is big enough or if the truck actually has a Tow pkg or just an aftermarket installed hitch. if it is aftermarket can it still pull that kinda wait

You can lay on your back and look at the back of the hitch/receiver. If it's factory it is welded to the factory bumper tube that runs between the frame rails and everything has the same coating. You should see the bumper cover brackets also tack welded to the tube. There are some aftermarket ones that are barely as big as a license plate and bolt to the bumper tube instead, and the type that bolt to the frame rails like traditional stick out like a sore thumb and it would be obvious if it was aftermarket since all you can really see of the factory one is the receiver itself. If it's aftermarket and has a 2" receiver then it'll at least be Class III at a minimum which is rated for 6000lbs, or typically up to 10,000lbs if used with a distribution system.

You may still have the RPO sticker in your glove box but it doesn't sound like it has factory tow package. I think you can run the VIN on the Mopar site (can for Jeeps I know) and it'll show you a build sheet but the site appears to be down.
