Default How Much Trailer?

Guys I am looking into buying an enclosed trailer to haul my 2 motorcycles which by themselves are about 1400 pounds, not including associated gear or luggage etc. I would like to get as big a trailer as I can pull with my 05 Durango which has the hemi. I am looking at dual axle 7x16 enclosed trailer.
What are the opinions of this trucks abilities. My destination is normally south from NY through the hills of PA and the Carolinas'. I have pulled a 20' dual axle landscape trailer from NY to Florida and back loaded with furniture and stuff, and the truck easily handled it without a problem...
Anyway just looking for some opinions..

Forgot to mention I do have the factory towing package.. I realize what the manual says for max wieght but I have to think there is a difference between a 5000lb landscape trailer and a 5000lb enclosed trailer as far wind resistance etc..

Thanks
Carver

looking around it says a 8,950-pound tow rating. Ive seen it donewith a race trailerand the hemi handled it fine, trip to FL from NY and back. Some guys should be able to chime in soon and give you a better weight limit.

I am pullingthe enclosed trailer Haulmark 8.5x18 full setupwith tool box, cabinets, genset, 25gals air compressor 2 ATVs and 2 dirts bike, all gears and so on... 6% grade mountain seems to be ok. The only thing is the backof the D is pushed down a bit. The rear air bag is on the way. Also, Ihave 04 Hemi with 2 speed transfer case all stock. Compared to my 98 Ford Expy EB this D isout performed the Expy EB.

Thanks for the help. are you using a load stablizing hitch?

I take it the air bag(s) is to help keep the truck level?

It's funny I traded in a v10 ford exp. for the Durango, and really thought it handled the hills much better then the v10 did.

Thanks again.

One BIG problem with the so called "tow package" is that it lacks the addition of the 3.92 rear gear. This gear is a "seperate" order ($60) on the invoice that is not included in the tow package. The stock 3.55 gear that comes with the tow package is a big mistake for those that want to tow a larger load. Most (99%) of the D's with the tow package have the stock 3.55 gear. If you look at the sticker in the glove box it lists the rear gear ratio that the D has. I bought my 04 Hemi D Limited used with the 3.92 and I had a big problem trying to find a used one with the 3.92 gear.

I pull two different trailers. My 5,000 lb open race car trailer that siloetes the roof line of the D is an easy pull at 75 mph and the D stays in coverter lockup even in large highway inclines. My other trailer a 3,300 lb enclosed V-nose trailer that is 18" over the top of the D roof line is a much harder pull than the 5,000 lb trailer because it's basically a big sail in the wind. The D likes to run in the tow/haul mode with this enclosed trailer as it won't stay in converter lock up .

I dont use load stabilizer.

You are correct the D Hemi with tow package most standard of 3.55 gear. Since I bought I used so I have no choice but if it were brand I definitely select 3.92 gear for towing.
