Default Lost my key! $1200 to fix!

I bought an 05 Durango in the US a couple months ago.
I got one key with it. I lost the key. Had it towed to Dodge.
They are saying the codes aren't working, so the locks must have been changed.
They said they will need to reprogram the locks to the old codes, and it will cost $1200!

Is there anything else I can do?

Doogie

That sounds like a huge load of BS to me. What kind of keys did your D come with?? If you have the large remote/key combo, then you should be able to have a regular non remote key burned for the vehicle.

Even if you hade the grey headed keys like my 01does,I can not imagine it costing that much. Sounds like someone wants you to pay for their upcoming summer vacation.

I am sure that others will chime in here, butI would get a second opinion before accepting this diagnosis.

I may be wrong, but I believe the keys for our D's are $270 a piece. I havean 04 D and also an 01 Dakota with the grey headed key n8ech is reffering to - they are $90.

i don't think there is a key for the new durango's that is with out the fab. so they will only offer the more expensive one.

as far as the cost... i believe that would be to change all the lock cylinders to match the new key and key code. I am guessing you didn't have another spare? because they should be able to go off the old key to get the current key code. ( the little bumps not the numeric code to program the keys) sorry about your luck but those are pricey.

Don't let the dealer BS you. I new programed key cost around $185 from my local dealer. I have a 05 T & C and 05 Durango had to replace both. You can even go to a local lock smith and he can cut you a new key, but they are more expensive. If they are a 5 star dealer I would call and report them.

Agreed. The dealer is full of crap. Get a new one because I wouldn't want a dime of my money going to them after trying to screw you like that.

Yes the key with the FOB is expensive, but we are in the hundred/two hundred dollar range. Not the thousand+ dollar range.

Amen . $135 bucks for a remote/ key from a 5 Star dealer programmed (evenTHAT PRICE choked me up) but I did not have a chice since you have to have a second key to try programming it yourself.

Somebody's trying to sell you a bag of goods ...

Tell'em to shove it !

I purchased a salvage 2006 dodge durango, I had to get keys made, Cost for 1 key was $100. That was for key with the remote on the key itself, just like factory. They also cut me a key for no charge, that did not have the remote on it. So I would have a spare. I got this done at a salvage repair shop, that he had purchased a key maker machine.... I dont know the name of the machine, but it was just like the dodge dealers. I would call around and DO NOT PAY THE 1200.00. My dodge dealer wanted $145.00 for 1 key. Call some salvage yards that repair vehicles and sell them... You will get a better deal.
Good Luck
